A to B
- Breather membrane: repels water which penetrates an outer cladding material but is still permeable to water vapour escaping from a structure.
C to D
- Cavity drainage: the gap between the membrane and the wall that allows the water to flow to the perimeter drainage.
- Cavity tray: a damp-proof membrane or pre-formed tray crossing the cavity of a wall at interruptions in the cavity.
- Cavity wall: an external wall (normally), where there is an inner and outer leaf with a space between the two.
- Damp-proof: impervious to moisture.
- Drained cavity: cavity which intercepts and drains away incoming water.
- Dry rot: fungus that attacks structural and joinery timbers, often with devastating results..
E to F
- Free-draining: ground through which free water rapidly drains away.
- Fungal decay: infection of timber by wood-destroying fungi such as wet rot and dry rot.
G to H
- High water table: the water table is above the underside of the lowest floor.
K to L
- Low water table: the water table is permanently below the underside of the lowest floor level.
O to P
- Party wall: a wall separating, and shared by, adjoining properties.
- Perimeter drainage: - is fitted around the outer edge of the basement to control the flow of water leading ultimately to the sump & pump unit.
- Plaster beetles: feed on moulds and exist under damp conditions conducive to mould growth and will not damage propert.
- Pump: pumps the water away from a basement.
S to T
- Tanking: a waterproof skin laid beneath a basement floor and up the basement walls.
U to V
- Vapour barrier: resistant membrane used to prevent moisture passing through the construction.
- Vapour control layer: defined as a material that will reduce the water vapour transfered through a building element into which it is incorporated.
- Vapour resistance: ability of a material to resist vapour penetration.
W to X
- Water table: plain below which ground is saturated with wate.
- Wet rot: decay of timber due to damp conditions.
- Wood worm: beetle infestation also known as the furniture beetle.
- Woodlouse: breed in decaying timbers and typically in damp properties.
